Named for the luminous, glass-like waters that cradle its shoreline, Crystal Beach (Kristalna Plaža) offers a true Robinson-Crusoe-style escape along the Ulcinj Riviera. Tucked away about 10 km north of the town center between Kruče Beach and Cold Bay (Utjeha), this 80-meter pocket of wild rocky shore is set against dramatic, pine-dotted cliffs and luxury hillside villas.
Crystal Beach used to be one of those secret, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it spots that you wouldn’t want to share with anyone, but in recent years people have started to notice. Nevertheless, it remains a world apart from the region’s busier Riviera hubs, offering pristine scenery and framed by clear views across the bay toward the marine-protected waters of Stari Ulcinj Island.

“Kristalna Plaža is where I go when I want to escape commercialized beach bars entirely. Because there are no sun loungers, music, or facilities, the vibe remains completely grounded in nature. My favorite strategy is visiting either before 09:00 AM – well before the excursion boats arrive – or late in the afternoon straight until sunset. The late-day light hitting the cliffs here makes for arguably one of the best golden hours in all of Montenegro. I also never visit without a mask and snorkel. The crystal-clear waters around the cliffs and out toward Stari Ulcinj Island offer some of the richest marine life along the Riviera.”
Packing Strategy: Pack water shoes and bring your own shade/supplies. The rocky entrance makes footwear essential, and because there are no kiosks on-site, a full cooler bag is key for spending the day here.

How to Get There: Access & Route Guide
Access to this secluded stretch of Montenegro’s coastline isn’t the easiest, but that difficulty acts as a natural filter against large crowds. Depending on your travel style, you can tackle the cliff path by land or take a scenic boat trip along the Riviera.
Driving & Hiking Trail
When arriving by car along the M2.4 coastal road, turn down Ulica Sulja Kalezića toward Cold Bay (Utjeha). Follow this road down until you reach an unofficial parking lot, which costs €5 per day. From there, it is a short walk to the start of the steep trail that leads down through shrubs and trees to the beach.
Boat Excursion & Fish Picnic
The easiest and most enjoyable way to reach Crystal Beach is by water. Excursion boats routinely depart from Ulcinj’s Old Town Marina around 9:30 AM and return by 4:00 PM. You’ll enjoy a 1-hour coastal ride each way, cliffside photo spots, and a fresh local fish picnic lunch on board.
Essential Safety & Access Advice
- Mobility Warning: The hiking path is steep, uneven, and unmaintained. This beach is not wheelchair-accessible and is not recommended for visitors with mobility issues or very young children.
- No Onsite Amenities: You will search in vain for toilets, freshwater showers, or sunbed rentals. Bring all essential supplies, including plenty of drinking water, snacks, and trash bags to carry back out with you.
- Maritime Caution: There are no lifeguards on duty. If you decide to swim out toward Stari Ulcinj Island, stay vigilant and keep an eye out for passing jet skis and excursion boats.
The Beach Experience: Swimming, Snorkeling & Terrain
Framed by towering yellow cliffs and lush Mediterranean greenery, Crystal Beach offers an intimate, wild coastal setting. Free from motorboats and noisy watersports, the cove stays quiet enough for swimming, floating, and exploring the coast at your own pace.
Snorkeling & Diving
The bay opens up directly toward Isle Old Ulcinj, a marine-protected area known for exceptional underwater visibility. Snorkelers and divers can explore rich, colorful rock formations and aquatic life along the base of the surrounding cliffs.
Cliff Jumping & Coasteering
For adventurous visitors, the craggy shoreline and outcropping boulders provide natural platforms for sea jumping. What’s more, coasteering is a favorite local pastime, provided you check water depth and wear proper footwear.
SUP & Cove Hopping
Taking to the water opens up the entire coastline’s hidden sea caves and secret coves. If you aren’t bringing your own gear, seasonal vendors on the shore offer stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, and pedal boats for rent.
Dining & Food Supplies
Pack Ahead or Dine Nearby
Because Crystal Beach is an unserviced wild cove, you will search in vain for beach bars, cafes, or snack kiosks on site. Packing enough drinking water and food for your stay is essential. If you prefer a sit-down meal after your swim, head just minutes up the road to neighboring Utjeha or Kruče for seaside dining.
