The Local Verdict

While Trsteno is the undisputed “toddler paradise” of the Budva Riviera, it does not mean that adults are not allowed to equally enjoy it. I particularly like to come here in September and early October, when the crowds are gone and the water is still lukewarm. It is a meditative experience, provided you remember your mask to explore the hidden grottoes that ring the bay.

Trsteno Beach is a hidden gem that proves why the Budva Riviera is so exceptional. Tucked between the larger resort towns of Budva and Kotor, this 50-meter-wide cove is a geological masterpiece, ringed by low-hanging limestone cliffs and lush Mediterranean greenery that shields the bay from the open sea’s winds.

“Trsteno is the Riviera’s natural nursery. The water here is so shallow and calm that it feels more like a heated turquoise pool than the Adriatic Sea.”

Out of season, Trsteno is a tranquil sanctuary, but its primary draw remains its status as a toddler paradise. The entrance to the water is incredibly gradual: it takes nearly 100 meters of walking before the sea even reaches chest height. This allows the sun to warm the shallow bay rapidly, offering the most comfortable swimming temperatures on the coast.

The “Clay-Sand” Magic

Unlike the pebbles found elsewhere in Budva, Trsteno features fine, beige sand with a unique, high-density texture. It sticks together almost like potter’s clay, making it the premier location for children to build intricate sandcastles that actually survive the gentle lapping waves.

Adventures Beneath the Surface

While the center of the bay is all soft sand, the limestone edges are teeming with marine life. The clear waters and rocky outcrops are home to a variety of colorful fish and mollusks, making it an excellent spot for beginner snorkelers. For the more adventurous, the nearby diving centers in Budva organize excursions to the ‘Oreste’ shipwreck and the mysterious Krekavica Cave.

The High Season Hustle

In the peak of August, Trsteno transforms. The limited public sand and the two local beach clubs – each occupying a side of the bay – become high-energy social spots. While it may sometimes feel crowded, the sea terraces managed by the clubs provide a sophisticated alternative to the public beach, offering elevated views and easier access to pizza, fries, and traditional Balkan fare.

Cyclist’s Sanctuary The beach’s proximity to the stone villages of Grbalj makes it a favorite rest stop for cyclists and hikers. The surrounding rural landscape is dotted with Orthodox churches and ancient olive groves, providing a rugged, cultural backdrop to your seaside escape.

Dining & Sunset

While the on-site bars offer standard beach fare, a short 5-minute drive takes you to the family-friendly Restaurant Carević in Krimovica. Known for its massive outdoor terrace, it’s the perfect place to contemplate the sunset after a long day of sunbathing.

The Family Strategy To get the most out of your day, use your €35 Trsteno voucher for lunch and a boat ride at the beach, then head to Carević for an early dinner. It is the perfect way to transition from the sea to the countryside. Make sure to visit the stables, the farm is one of the few places on the coast where kids can interact with animals in such a scenic, rustic setting before the sun sets over the Grbalj horizon.

Where to Stay

Because Trsteno is a protected natural cove, there are no hotels located directly on its sands. To enjoy this “toddler paradise,” most visitors choose to stay in the nearby stone village of Krimovica or along the main coastal road. This positioning allows you to enjoy the rural tranquility of the Grbalj region while remaining just a 5-minute drive from the turquoise waters of the bay.
